Thomas Ratcliffe Barnett (1868?1946) was a Scottish minister, writer, traveller, and observer of Scottish life and landscape, best known for his lyrical books on the people, folklore, and scenery of Scotland. Barnett was born 23 December 1868 in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, the son of a flax?mill cashier. He was educated at Paisley, the University of Glasgow, and the United Presbyterian College, Edinburgh, before being ordained in 1899. Barnett was more than a parish minister, he was a wartime chaplain during the First World War , founder of the Princess Margaret Rose Hospital in Edinburgh, caring for children injured in the war , he was a musician and keen walker, deeply engaged with Scottish cultural memory and landscape traditions His writing blends travelogue, folklore, anecdote, and gentle spiritual reflection, often capturing the voices of rural Scots and the moods of the Highlands and Lowlands. This book is a story?rich social history, blending folklore, memory, and character sketches of ordinary Scots?gaberlunzies, preachers, village women, shepherds, and elders?captured just as their world was fading. Barnett, a minister and gifted storyteller, preserves the voices, customs, and moral imagination of 18th?19th?century Scotland.
