Rubbing and a few chips and closed tears to dustjacket edges with larger chips to dustjacket spine ends. Tipped-in in front free endpaper: Review of this book from "Time, July 21, 1930." Laid-in: 6.75 in. x 4.6 in. dated letter (October 25, 1937) with printed Cleveland address at its head signed by James R. Garfield, the son of President Garfield, to John Hord thanking him for the loan of the book, and alerting "dear John" to the fact that this book is a "true first printing." James Rudolph Garfield was a politician himself who served as Secretary of the Interior under T.R. After the May, 1930 first printing the publisher altered pages 99-104 in subsequent publications to avoid a libel suit. The tipped-in book review detils the potential scandal. Author Owen Wister (1860 1938) was an American writer and historian, considered the "father" of western fiction. He is best remembered for writing The Virginian and a biography of Ulysses S. Grant. Wister had spent several summers in the American West, making his first trip to the Territory of Wyoming in 1885, planning to shoot big game, fish trout, meet the Indians, and spend nights in the wild. Like his friend Teddy Roosevelt, Wister was fascinated with the culture, lore and terrain of the region. He was ".struck with wonder and delight, had the eye to see and the talent to portray the life unfolding in America.
