Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Katherine F. Clarke (illustrator). Yellow-Back Edition (1,000 copies). The decorated front cover has two small stains, otherwise a very nice copy without any flaws. 6 X 9" 175 pages, published 1970. After the rich Northern Placer diggings of 1848 and 1849 began to play out, J. Ross Browne, the great early California mining expert and historical reporter, stated : "The year 1850 was marked by the first of a multitude of 'rushes' or sudden migrations in search of imaginary rich diggings." In 1860 he sketched the two woodcuts used on the covers of this book to caricaturize the Kern River rush. The front cover shows the men riding to the mines in stage coach and trudging back home practically shoeless on the back cover. Author Ardis Manly Walker, poet, historian and raconteur, met a unique need to preserve the rich historical heritage of the Kern River Diggins. Born in 1901, he was fortunate to know many of the characters in this book. 34 drawings by eminent Western artist Katherine F. Clarke, end page maps. Seller Inventory # 83070
