Illustrations by Walter Rane. Small 4to. Full brown calf with raised bands and elaborate gilt lettering and decorative rules and devices. 335pp. All edges gilt. Illustrations, brown moire silk endpapers, sewn-in brown satin page marker. Fine. Immaculate, tight limited (unspecified) first edition, preceding the Doubleday first trade edition. This primo copy bears tipped to front flyleaf a fine archival decorative-edged bookplate, boldly inscribed and signed in black ballpoint "For [---] / Wallace Stegner." Book is housed in the Franklin Library's thin card stock slipcase with gold foil label and is accompanied by the publisher's "Notes from the Editors" leaflet.
