Front cover lettered in red, spine lettered in black. a near fine copy. First Edition, first printing, first issue (without frontispiece, Myers "believed that copies with the frontispiece are later." This copy is in the original dust jacket, which has eighteen titles by Grey adversied verso, dropping from the ads on the first ad leaf in the book LAST OF THE GREAT SCOUTS but adding WILDFIRE (1916); THE U.P. TRAIL (1918); THE DESERT OF WHEAT (1919); THE RED HEADED OUTFIELD (1920) and Books for Boys section: THE YOUNG FORESTER (1910); THE YOUNG LION HUNTER (1911); KEN WARD IN THE JUNGLE (1912) and THE YOUND PITCHER (1917), which is to say, this is the earliest state of the dust jacket, which is frayed aat the edges, with some few small splits in the folds. Loosely enclosed is a five-line typed letter signed from Zane Grey on his embossed stationery, dated December 6, 1923, to Mr. W.G. Chapman in Chicago: "I am sorry I cannot let you dispose of 'The Redheaded Outfield'. My material is all syndicated." William Gerard Chapman was president of the International Press Bureau in Chicago, an agency through which Zane Grey and Edgar Rice Burroughs, amond many others, funneled reams of work. Chapman successfully sued Burroughs for abuse of his legal rights by Burroughs. Provenance: From the Zane Grey collection of Waring-Jones: Larry Moskowitz. A rare book in the pictorial dust jacket, which illustrted a game in progress.
