About this Item
[spine slightly turned, a bit of spotting and light soiling to top edge, a couple of tiny stains on ffep; jacket moderately rubbed, a couple of surface-scratches on front panel, a bit of wear at corners, half-inch closed tear at top front hinge]. SIGNED by the author on top of his printed name on the title page. "A desperate manhunt pits a Navajo cop against a military murderer," the Navajo cop in question being one Sam Watchman, "a man of our time [who] must measure himself and decide whether to disclaim his own heritage or affirm it." After turning out one more "Sam Watchman" book ("The Threepersons Hunt," in 1974), the author apparently decided to cede the Navajo-cop-fiction field to Tony Hillerman, who had published his first "Joe Leaphorn" book in 1970, and who would eventually double-down with the introduction of "Jim Chee" a decade later. The Garfield character won the movie (well, TV-movie) sweepstakes, though, with "Relentless" being adapted for a CBS telefilm in 1977, starring Native American actor Will Sampson (best remembered for his role as the Chief in ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST).
