Illustrations by Harlan M. Krakovitz. Small 4to. Full dark green calf with raised bands and elaborate gilt lettering and decorative rules and devices. 1121pp. All edges gilt. Illustrations, green moire silk endpapers, sewn-in green satin page marker. Fine. Pristine and perfect first of this limited edition, just preceding the Little, Brown & Company first trade edition. This World War Two historical fiction became a popular made-for-television miniseries in 1988, and this unusual copy bears signatures of two co-stars on matching heavy stock 5" X 3" cards on an inner flyleaf: At top is ROBERT MITCHUM (1917-77; portrays Captain Victor "Pug" Henry), who signs large and bold in black ballpoint; below him is RALPH BELLAMY (1904-91; portrays Franklin D. Roosevelt), signs in rather light, black fineline. Book is housed in the Franklin Library's thin card stock slipcase with circular gold foil "First Edition Society" label and is also accompanied by their "Notes from the Editors" leaflet.
