Greely's memoir of Civil War service, exploration, and politics; he fought at Richmond, Second Manassas, Fredericksburg and Antietam, then helped organize three units of "colored" infantry; later was posted in the west, protecting the mail route from Denver to Salt Lake City; then led the disastrous Lady Franklin Bay Expedition; yet later became Chief Signal Officer of the U.S. Army, responsible for modernizing communications in Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Philippines & Alaska. 'Selftyped' SIGNED letter laid in, regarding notes enclosed by Greely (not present) to be pasted into volumes donated to the Kane Club by the recipient of the note. Full red cloth, gilt titling. Corners rubbed & frayed, spine and part of rear cover a bit faded. Letter and title page discolored from clippings now gone. Text clean; xi, [3], 356 pages, index, b/w plates. Size: 6" by 8¾".
