Octavo, 31pp., plus two folding maps. A clean, sound copy, very good or better, in the publisher's pale green printed wraps. A contemporary news clipping regarding General Burnside's Order Number Eight, which dismissed a number of prominent Union generals, is hinged to the title page. The map at front, which depicts the "left wing" of the Army of the Potomac's formations at the Battle of Fredericksburg, has a short tear and a few corner creases, else clean. The map at rear, which depicts the "right wing" of Confederate formations, has only one tiny marginal tear. Most interesting is the contemporary ownership SIGNATURE of Joseph Howland, a Union officer from New York who served as a field commander of the 16th New York Regiment at the Battle of Gaines's Mill during the Peninsula Campaign. He was wounded right at the start of the battle, but refused to be evacuated and stayed with his men until the fighting was over. Though it's hard to determine whether Howland and Franklin saw action on the same battlefield, it does appear that Franklin's troops, who had been fighting nearby in the White Oak Swamp, entered as reinforcements towards the end of the Battle of Gaines's Mill. As such, an appealing copy with meaningful provenance. This pamphlet consists of Franklin's disputations of Burnside's testimony regarding the failures of the Battle of Fredericksburg. Scarce; we found only one auction appearance since the 1960s. [Note that the pamphlet is not signed by Franklin.]. Seller Inventory # 11767
