About this Item
Palmyra, MO: Press of Sosey Bros., 1903. "Souvenir" [sic] Edition, First book edition [serialized first in The Palmyra Spectator]. Signed and dated by Sosey on the flyleaf.Illustrated with plates from drawings by James B. Settles. Octavo, xvi, 157 pp. Red-cloth-backed pictorial paper boards, spine lettered in gilt. Abrasion at top left of cover [see scan], bookplate and blindstamp of the Historical Society of Montana, small spot of minor fading near spine bottom, else fine. A handsomely preserved copy. A handsome copy of the first edition of Frank H. Sosey's Robert Devoy: A Tale of the Palmyra Massacre. Fictionalized - with dialogue and some characters - but obviously heartily researched, Robert Devoy is Sosey's account of the incident of October 18, 1862, in Palmyra, Missouri, when ten Confederate prisoners were shot (by Federal prisoners)in retaliation for the presumed murder of a local Union man. For this act, General John McNeil became known as the "Butcher of Palmyra" and was denounced in newspapers both in the Union states and in other countries. Confederate enlistments, and reenlistments, increased after the massacre. More at: civilwarstlouis(dot com). A fascinating account of an intense moment in the Civil War, nicely illustrated by Settles. L87. Seller Inventory # 000028
