Presumed first edition, first printing. Printed in Ussel, France at the workshop of J. Chambreuil, September 30, 1968. The engravings were pulled by G. Leblanc, rue Saint Jacques, Paris. Note: This is not the deluxe copy and thus it does not have a signed original etching by Toyen. This is no. 278 of an edition of 350 copies on chiffon de Mandeure wove paper, and issued in 16mo format. 7.25 x 5.75 inches. Plain paper wrappers, exceptionally clean, with crisp black and red lettering to the front wrapper and to the spine. With 11 to 133 numbered pages. Deckled fore edge and bottom edge to a handsome effect. With 6 full-page gravures by Toyen. Very discreet stamp of previous bookseller to a rear FEP. With the original glassine over-wrapper, in very good condition and with minor wrinkling and loss at the spine head. A Very Good copy. Scarce in any condition. 14 oz. Toyen, the pen name of Marie Cermínová [1900-1980], was a Czech surrealist painter. Radovan Ivsic [1921-2009] was a Croatian writer, best known for his drama Kralj Gordogan and book of poems Crno. The writer spent his life uncompromisingly in the spirit of liberty. Such values brought him close to the surrealist movement. He was a friend of André Breton and Toyen. The fascist prime minister of Croatia during World War II, Ante Pavelic, personally ordered confiscation of Ivsic's first book, Narcis. His theatrical play Kralj Gordogan was banned in Croatia by both the fascist and communist dictatorships until 1979. Couverture souple. Edition originale.
