First edition softcover is in Poor condition, having tears and folds to edges (long-ago former owner/bookseller repaired one of tears at bottom with celluloid tape); much rubbing/scuffing to covers; spine top and bottom missing small areas of paper covering; former owner has pasted their bookplate on reverse of front cover; moderate handling wear to pages. INSCRIBED BY C. ROACH SMITH on top of front cover in faded founain-ink: "Mr. John Smith, Wootton ----From his cousin the author". Very scarce to find in first edition and signed. The book is EXTREMELY FRAGILE, and must be handled with extraordinary care (pages are incredibly brittle). When purchased, book will be shipped in archival plastic envelope with backing board, and should be opened carefully by using scissors to cut vertically through plastic. Literary criticism.
