220 x 150 mm. (8 2/3 x 5 7/8"). [3] p.l., xxix, [1], 336 pp., [2] blank leaves. Publisher's blue cloth, spine gilt-stamped with the author, title, and publisher. With original illustrated dust jacket. 21 plates by the author, illustrated title page, and attractive vignette headpieces at the beginning of each chapter. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR in ink on the front free endpaper: "Rockwell Kent / to / Peggy Eaton / 1935 / oxoxoxoxo." â The dust jacket with a slightly darkened spine and minor splits to the joints, minimal shelf wear to the binding, otherwise very fine inside and out, with only the most trivial imperfections. This is an autographed presentation copy of the first edition of Rockwell Kent's account of his time spent in Greenland. American artist and writer Kent (1882-1971) undertook several arctic expeditions during his career, and was so taken by his 1929 visit to Greenland that he lived 1931-32 in the remote fishing town of Igdlorssuit. He spent this period painting and writing, but also observing and befriending the locals. "Salamina," named after Kent's housekeeper and lover during this period, provides a look at these people through Kent's eyes. His illustrations, stark and unpretentious as their subjects, are representative of Kent's work at his artistic zenith. This copy is charmingly inscribed to Peggy Eaton (whom we could not positively identify) with the warmth for which Kent was well known.
