First edition (for sale in Japan, Okinawa and Korea), first prnt. Printed in Japan by Shinkosa. Paper-covered boards with gilt lettering. Text in English. Signed by Michener on the title page. Toned boards, shelfwear mostly at spine bottom edge and corners, offsetting on front and rear endpages, previous owner's name and date on front pastedown; dustjacket with chipped corners and spine ends, shallow wrinkles on flaps, minimal toning and rubbing, and wear on the spine and flap folds. Good condition in a Good dustjacket with an archival cover. Basis for the 1957 Joshua Logan film with Marlon Brando; nominated for ten Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actress won by Miyosha Umeka, the first Asian actress to win an Oscar.
