In spite of the New Age-ish title, the latest from Bolles (Remembering and Forgetting, 1987, etc.) attempts to put perception in proper perspective--not as a mystical phenomenon, but at the very heart of how we comprehend ourselves and the world. On the other hand, don't expect to come away with a clear idea of what perception is. Bolles is rather better at saying what it is not. So he starts off with a visit to the artificial-intelligence folks who are trying to get computers to recognize (perceive) speech and language. Not much new to report here: The machines do well by learning a particular speaker's idiosyncracies--but they can't seem to generalize. Then Bolles goes on to review what happened in psychology in the 20th century with the rise of both behaviorism and Freudianism--widely divergent schools of psychology that nevertheless share what Bolles calls a ``physicalist'' point of view that there is an objective world out there. He offers a nice discussion of Gestalt psychology, but faults that school for its naive realism. What Bolles touts instead is the brain's imparting meaning to sensations, constructing perception by analyzing neural inputs that change over time as a result of learning, attention, emotion. If this sounds nebulous, it is. If this sounds as if there's still a question of the ghost in the machine (who is aware and waiting and watching), there is. As for enlightening the reader on what is current and choice about neural coding (for pain, for example), forget it. Bolles is more concerned with putting perception on a pedestal than in telling us what it's all about. (Nine line drawings.) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
This is an interesting account of theories about the nature of human perception, conflicts between those who account for everything in purely physical terms, and the humanists who emphasize mystery. The book also reveals the relationship between perception and meaning, and discusses everyday perceptions such as dreams, thoughts, and sensations. Bolles consistently emphasizes the role of awareness and the importance of acknowledging mystery as he explores issues concerning human consciousness, human uniqueness, and the contributions of culture to perception. His book is recommended especially for public and seminary libraries.

Store description
Bookfever.com - the name used by Volk and Iiams, Booksellers- specializes in first editions of twentieth century literature, with an emphasis on women authors, African American, Native American and Latin American authors - plus mystery & detective fiction, science fiction & fantasy, poetry and children's & illustrated books. We try to offer many uncommon books, and have a large selection of first books, and books by authors who are less frequently collected. Of the approximately 60,000 volumes in stock, the majority are hardcover first editions, although we also stock vintage science fiction paperbacks as well as sf digests and pulps. We also have a large selection of books signed by the author and uncorrected proof copies. Only about 50% of our stock is catalogued, so please inquire if you are searching for specific titles. We have been selling books by mail order and on the internet since 1993. We have a large booth dedicated to books (called Books Upstairs) at the Antiques Upstairs Mall, 5 Main Street, Jackson, CA. (open every day from 10-5) The emphasis there is on Western Americana, children¿s books and inexpensive reading copies. In 1998 we relocated our main business from Sacramento to the Sierra foothills of Amador County, about 35 miles east of downtown Sacramento and between Ione & Sutter Creek. There, on 10 acres of rolling oak-covered hills, we built a "bookhouse" for our books.
