They resist escalation of wars, violence sexual temptations and crime in what they view as a world gone mad. Many twists ensue from the prologue in WWII when a fighter pilot saves a young German pilot from certain death, and is himself attacked and nearly destroyed. By book's conclusion, various perspectives are presented as to who he was, why he acted in the unique manner he did, and what became of him.
