Hardcover first edition - Limited, numbered edition. A very appealing copy of this collection of poems - includes a frontispiece portrait of Elizabeth Barrett Browning with a tissue guard and a panel of stylized floral illustrations on the left side of each page of the sonnets. "Of this edition, sixteen hundred have been printed on Van Gelder handmade paper of which fifteen hundred are for sale. An interesting association copy boldly signed on the limitation page by Wyn Ritchie, a silent film actress with minor appearances in some of Charlie Chaplin's films and later very active in Los Angeles art scene and architectural circles, married to Academy award winning songwriter Ray Evans. 76 pp plus colophon. Top edge gilt. Very good in brown suede with gilt lettering and decorations on front cover - offsetting to endpapers and the outer margin of a few other leaves, darkening to spine and fore-edges of covers. Bound in 1/2 vellum and and matching paper covered boards with paper titles present to the spine and the front board. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid, boards rubbed and worn and sunned to the extremities. Elizabeth Barrett Browning was a prolific writer and reviewer in the Victorian period, and in her lifetime, her reputation as a poet was at least as great as that of her husband, poet Robert Browning. Some of her poetry has been noted in recent years for strong feminist themes, but the poems for which Elizabeth Barrett Browning is undoubtedly best know are Sonnets from the Portuguese.
