This utterly engrossing book on the craft of acting by Sir John Gielgud is made extra special by bearing a unique presentation from him to the eminent British economist, Jossleyn Hennessy. Clearly, the economist had no intention of ever losing his special signed copy as he set about not only adding his ownership signature and home address above, but also his personal bookplate.Gielgud's presentation inscription appears to reference the politics of the day - it was inscribed by him in 1973 (a decade after the book's publication) and I believe reads "my best over the tory years", which would seem to refer to the then "tory" government of Ted Heath. Another great feature is that there is some occasional underlining and notes added to particular passages, made during the economist's reading of the book. John Gielgud, of course, was one of the greatest English stage actors of the twentieth century. Gielgud's career spanned eight decades. During this time, he not only dominated the British stage, but also became a noted director, leading Shakespearean, and movie actor - most notably, starring in David Lynch's The Elephant Man and then alongside Dudley Moore in the comedy Arthur (1981) for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
