About this Item
Burlington, octavo, [iv], 267 p., 44 text woodcuts (one partly colored), and 3 woodcut engravings on the front wrap. ***CONTENT: Charles Baker Adams (1814-1853) was an American naturalist and educator, and Professor of Natural History at Middlebury and Amherst Colleges. He served as the first State Geologist of Vermont from 1845 to 1848. This volume is one of his most important works. Initial chapters herein outline geologic processes (volcanoes, earthquakes, erosion, deposition, etc.), fossils, extinction, and Earth history. There is an interesting section on the relationship between geology and the Bible. Later, extended chapters provide specifics on the geology of Vermont: glacial evidence, scenery and topography, soils and agriculture, rock types, minerals, economic resources, and more. Numerous text figures augment and add clarity to the written material. ***CONDITION: This is a VG copy with the original printed-paper front wrap; rear wrap lacking. The front wrap is well preserved, with bold, bright lettering and three figures on the verso. Tan cloth spine worn at the extremities, but with most of the original printed title label; binding firm. Aside from the infrequent foxing spot, the text pages are pristine: fresh, clean, and bright. Adams has inscribed the front wrap: "With the respects of the author". Two later library stamps (one a blind stamp) and docketing numbers are the only other traces of previous ownership. A sound copy of a very scarce report. Prime 68. Hazen 26. BMNH 2206.
