Originally published in Germany in 1971. A crisp, fresh, 4th printing copy inscribed and signed by Eric Carle on the half title page. Tidy gift inscription to previous owner at bottom of inside cover else this books is FINE: clean, glossy boards, crisp, bright pages. No wear at all to the die cuts or any of the pages. Very nice! This is a remarkable book with die-cut pages that tell a story of boy who received a birthday message in a sort of code: he must follow the directions to find his gift. "Pattern-recognition, matching shapes, following instructions, and simple map reading" are introduced in a very appealing format. And of course, as it's Carle, there is plenty of bright color!
