About this Item

Description:

First Edition. xviii, [2], 654 pages. 8vo. Publisher's green cloth gilt. An ex-institutional library copy, with bookplate of the Truesdale Hospital of Fall River Massachusetts on front pastedown. Small call letters on spine, pocket in rear and an occasional embossed stamp. INSCRIBED BY BOTH AUTHORS in the year of issue "To Dr. Karl T. Compton with the affectionate regard of the authors. Samuel C Prescott, Murray P. Horwood, April 25, 1935". Another previous owner name on front flyleaf (a Fall River MD whose name is indistinct). Cloth. A substantially rewritten and enlarged edition of Prof. W. T. Sedgwick's work "Principles of sanitary science and the public health : with special reference to the causation and prevention of infectious diseases." While the author's preface here notes Sedgwick's book appeared in 1901, it was published in the following year, 1902. Sedgwick's work was 368 pages, here enlarged to 654 (clearly sufficient to call this a new book, and a first edition). Dr. Karl T. Compton was the President of MIT (The Massachusetts Institute of Technology) from 1930-1948, where both authors Prescott and Horwood taught. Local legend has it that Truesdale Hospital was the facility where Lizzie Borden had her gallbladder removed in the final years of her life. The facility, built in 1920, is still there but mostly converted into apartment units. Sadly this book was published after Lizzie's death so there is no chance she had a chance to read it.
