Full contemporary leather binding in calf with gilt titles to a red leather label to the spine, gilt decorated compartments, nicely patinated calf boards. Signed by Maxwell on the verso of the title-page to prevent piracy. FIRST EDITION. The Society of Improvers in the Knowledge of Agriculture in Scotland, formed in 1723, was the first agricultural society in Europe. Its aim was to introduce new agricultural methods, and much of this information is contained in the Select Transactions. Pagination: 1 leaf (imprimatur), xxx, 457, [1]pp, and 1 folding engraved plate at the rear. Provenance: bookplate to the rear paste down for David Scott of Nether Benholm. Approximately 8 inches tall (20.5cm). Condition Report Externally Spine good condition rubbed and worn, gilt titles to a red label, five gilt raised bands with six gilt decorated compartments. Joints good condition sound, rubbed and worn. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition calf leather boards with minor marks and rubbing. Page edges good condition top edge darkened, all edges tanned. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition tanned and marked, book plate to the rear. End papers good condition tanned and marked. Title good condition lightly tanned. Pages good condition tanned with some foxing. Binding good condition sound.
