Sydney, Angus and Robertson, 1968 (first edition). Large quarto, [x], 60 plates. Cloth a little bumped at the corners and head of the spine (the latter with slight associated creasing to the textblock throughout); two small abrasions to the front pastedown where the dustwrapper flap had previously been taped down; a very good copy with the unclipped dustwrapper a little bumped and creased, with one tiny tear. Fifty of the sixty reproductions 'have never been published before. The unpublished work comprises fourteen drawings made in 1967-68, with other major works done between 1930 and the 1960s'. Provenance: Professor T.G.H. Strehlow, with his ownership signature ('University of Adelaide, 11th January, 1969') on the front free endpaper. Below it, Norman Lindsay has written a personal message: 'Dear Ted, It is a pleasure for me to record in this book the respect I have for you as an ethnologist and the esteem I have for your friendship. Ever yours, Norman Lindsay'. Loosely inserted are two contemporary colour snapshots of Lindsay, one with Strehlow, the other with his second wife Kathleen, taken at Springwood. Theodor (Ted) Strehlow (1908-1978) and Norman Lindsay (1879 - November 1969) had a close friendship in their later years; not least, Lindsay played an important role in the eventual publication of Strehlow's magnum opus, 'Songs of Central Australia' (1971). We have previously sold a letter written by Lindsay to Strehlow in August 1968; by this time, Angus and Robertson had delayed and deferred the publication of the book for almost a decade, but Lindsay - a longtime client of the publishers - had been onto them, and 'it is only my letter which has jerked them into a fresh consideration [of] it'.
