Edges quite soiled, otherwise a vg copy in edge worn jacket. Inscribed thusly: "To Ellen Weise, Friend and Collaborator, with Roman Jakobson's eternal gratitude". This collection includes seven signed, handwritten letters to the same recipient, sent from the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stamford. Some are brief directives; others cover several sprawling pages. Mostly the letters concern professional matters--Weise was evidently holding down the Jakobson fort at Harvard while the master was on leave in California-- but often contain endearments as well. Weise was charged with preparing/editing/writing(?) several papers, and in addition to the letters, this lot contains a mimeograph of additions to Jakobson's bibliography, which he has inscribed, "To Eppy/who helped me to write most of these studies/Roman". Lastly, there is a photocopied essay, to which Jakobson has added Weise's name in front of his, as though she was the principal author. An illuminating little archive from a major figure in twentieth century thought. Seller Inventory # 055602
