The spine of the dust jacket is slightly faded. Interior in very good condition.; The shaving mug is nothing more than a container designed to hold a bar of shaving soap. It grew out of the necessity for sanitary barber shops, but through brilliant marketing it soon evolved into a beautiful, desirable object of art. To combat a fungus known as "barber's itch," barbers offered their customers the opportunity to purchase a shaving mug of their own. To identify the mug they could have their name printed on it in gold script, and if they desired they could add an illustration that would represent their trade, fraternal organization, or hobby. This resulted in one of the most interesting and beautiful forms of American folk art. The illustrations are beautifully rendered, and give us a rare glimpse of bygone people and their trades. It is little wonder that shaving mugs have been avidly sought by collectors. In this stunning book by Keith Estep, these mugs are illustrated in full color with the in- formation collectors need to appreciate their history and value. In addition Keith gives extensive coverage to another barbershop treasure: barber bottles. These examples of the glass makers art are equally beautiful and compliment any shaving mug collection. As a respected collector and dealer himself, Keith is able to give the reader practical information about building a collection as well.
