Inscribed on the front cover: "To Warren K. Moorehead / with compliments / Howard Jones." Warren King Moorehead (1866-1939) was an American archaeologist and writer, primarily known for his work in the field of Native American archaeology. Born in Siena, Italy, he grew up in Xenia, Ohio. Moorehead was the first curator of the Department of Archaeology at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where he worked from 1901 until his death in 1939. He played a significant role in early archaeological explorations and excavations in the United States, particularly in the Ohio Valley. Moorehead was involved in the excavation of the Hopewell Mound Group in Ross County, Ohio, and his work contributed to the understanding of the Hopewell culture. He published numerous articles and books on archaeology, including "The Stone Age in North America" (1910) and "The American Indian in the United States" (1914).
