Matthiessen also revised it, and a new edition was issued a couple of years later. Matthiessen was an fascinating figure in his own right, from his early days as a CIA officer who founded the Paris Review magazine as a cover for his spying activities to his later career sympathizing with the American Indian Movement and environmental activism.
