Signed Original Post Office Evaluation Form from Trollope's early Post Office Career-21 Feb 1843

This is a portion of an original printed evaluation form with evaluation comments, which appear to be in Trollope's hand and Trollope's additional comments, "Books of Attendance as necessary. He's careful to report errors. His Sureties are both Solvent.", initials "A. T." and date "21 Feb 1843" on the verso. It apparently was torn from the full evaluation form to save just the portion with Trollope's initials. Anthony Trollope's first significant employment was in 1834, with the early British Post Office, a career which he continued for thirty years. In 1841, he was sent to Ireland and served as a traveling postal surveyor clerk, performing inspections of post office operations around the Irish countryside. This document appears to be an example from one such inspection. It is significant in that its date in February of 1843 precedes even his beginning his first novel, The Macdermots of Ballycloran, later that same year.
