Hardcover with DJ. Dark green cloth with bronze lettering. Binding good and tight and clean. DJ present, in protective mylar. Original price of $5.00 on the front flap. A clean and attractive copy with no condition issues at all. Top edge yellow (as issued). Patterned endpapers. Title page dated 1962. Copyright page dated 1962 and stated First Printing. SIGNED ON THE HALF TITLE PAGE by Rachel Carson -- just her name (without middle initial), no inscription. 368 pages. Illustrated by Lois and Louis Darling. It is impossible to overstate the importance of this Silent Spring in the history of natural history writing and the environmental movement. Many of its precepts are common knowledge now (though not enough of them!) but they were revelatory at the time. It remains the loudest and most heeded warning knell of the environmental movement. This is the first printing of the first edition in very good condition and with Rachel Carson's rare signature (without inscription). Please email with questions or to request photos. Pardon the glare in the photo of the front cover - that's the mylar reflecting something beneath the book.…

Store description
We're at 805 Caroline Street, in the heart of Fredericksburg's historic district. Open Monday to Saturday 10-6; and Sunday 12-5. In warmer months we stay open until 9 most nights, but you might want to call ahead. (540) 373-6148 Shipping rates are for Media Mail, in a padded envelope - WE DO NOT ADD TRACKING UNLESS THE CUSTOMER REQUESTS IT AND PAYS FOR IT - we have been selling books online for more than 20 years & find that the USPO delivers 99.99% of packages quickly and safely, without any need for a tracking number. We trust them & we hope you will too. If you need tracking, please consider PRIORITY SHIPPING. We ship orders valued at more than $50 in a box, at no additional charge. Priority mailing is for a Flat-Rate envelope, with tracking included. If the book does not fit into a flat rate envelope, we will likely need to request extra shipping costs from you, in order to put it in a box. We only charge the actual amount of shipping, so we hope you'll understand that it's just a matter of getting the book to you without taking a loss on it -- shipping is a service we happily offer without a 'handling' charge.... but we can't afford to charge you less than the cost of the stamps!…

Terms of sale
Regular shipping by USPS Media Mail is $4. MEDIA MAIL SHIPPING DOES NOT INCLUDE TRACKING.
If you'd like tracking, please let us know before you place the order - We're happy to do it but it costs $1 extra because it means we have to print a shipping label for it individually, slowing down the shipping process considerably -- and we want to be able to keep basic shipping costs as low as we can.
