About this Item
A 3.5 inch wide and 2.25 inch tall card, signed boldly "Kind regards of David Swing." An attractive example of this signature. Minor adhesive staining on reverse, as well as notations from the recipient, which reads "Received Aug 4th, 1886. M. Henry Pfaffle (born 1862), Minonk, Ills." David Swing (1830-1894) is of German origin, and was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1852 he graduated at Miami university, at Oxford Ohio. He was called to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Chicago in 1866, uniting it with the North Presbyterian Church to form the Fourth Presbyterian Church. He was accused of heresy while there, and the bitter trial and struggle led him to resign his position. Within a week of his resignation, his popular appeal led to the formation of a new church. He was a newspaper writer and essayist, and is renowned as an editor who dealt with current events. He was a member of the Chicago Literary Club from 1874 to his death in 1894. He was the first Chairman of the Committee on Arrangements and Exercises, and was offered the presidency several times. He presented twelve papers, of which "A True Love Story" was the Club's first published paper. He is the author of "Club Essays" and other works. Seller Inventory # 002592
