Signed by Balthus on the limitation page. The Sonnets To Orpheus by the greatest writer of poetry in German since Goethe. Rainer Maria Rilke endowed the words of his native tongue with a new and unique significance. Rilke rarely describes a thing straightforwardly, explains a biographer. Instead, he uses the methods of a painter He hints at parallels in other, unrelated realms, until the object stands before us, clearly and recognizable as itself These fifty-five sonnets, published in 1923, three years before the poet s death, describe his relationship to every aspect of creation, and view death as a continuation not a termination of life. Our special edition offers a selection of twenty-nine of the sonnets in the original German with the superb English verse translation by Stephen Mitchell on facing pages. Balthus was encouraged by Rilke to dedicate his life to the arts. The two illustrations for this edition are a tribute to his childhood friend. Two color woodcut prints by Balthus. The two Balthus images have been cut into woodblocks, one for each color, by the master Japanese blockmaker, Keiji Shinohara, who then printed them on hand-made Kozo Uwazen paper. The text, set by hand, was printed on hand-made Japanese paper. Book and box are bound in beige linen, overlapped with red Nigerian goatskin. (LEC). Signed edition limited to 300 numbered copies.…

Due to potential delays with Media Mail from Hawaii, we mainly ship with Priority Mail within the US (at Media Mail prices)

All items are as described and Honolulu Rare Books makes every effort for clarity and preciseness in description, but errors do occur and the seller makes no guarantees for ultimate accuracy. If you're dissatisfied with your purchase (Incorrect Book/Not as Described/Damaged) or if the order hasn't arrived, you're eligible to request a refund within 30 days of the estimated delivery date.
All returns must be approved before an item is shipped back. Domestic returns generally take two weeks and International returns can take up to six weeks to be received and processed. In the event that an item is being returned due to an error on our part,a prepaid return label will be supplied via email upon request. All books are offered subject to prior sale.
Shipping terms
Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required.
Orders usually ship within 2 business days [M-F]. We will provide tracking for all orders. Items shipped via USPS Mail should arrive within 4-14 business days. We ship from Hawaii. Media Mail can take up to 14 - 20 days just to reach the West Coast by ship. Therefore we ship all smaller and regular sized items within the US by Priority Mail without additional cost to the customer. Oversized or heavy books might have to be shipped by Media Mail.
Please note, as per USPS, depending on service location and/or high peak periods within the post office, deliveries can take up to 21 business days to arrive. Should your order not arrive within 21 business days, please contact us promptly for resolution.
