A presentation copy of these historical letters illuminating the situation in Spain during the reign of Charles II, inscribed by Philip Henry Stanhope to Lady Holland. The first edition of this uncommon work.Editor's presentation copy, with his letter bound in before the title page; 'Grosvenor Place, April 5. 1843, My dear Lady Holland, Enclosed in the little volume which you have done me the favour to receipt. My country rambles are postponed to Monday so that if you still wish it I can have the pleasure of dining with you on Sunday. Very faithfully yours, Mahon'. Ink inscription to the title page, not in the same hand of the author, 'from the editor? to E. Holland'.Lady Holland, Elizabeth Vassall Fox, was a noted political hostess during the Georgian era. The wife of the Whig politician Henry-Vassal Fox, the third Baron Holland. She hosted political and literary gatherings at their Kensington Home, Holland House. Though important for her political influence, she is also known for permanent introduction the dahlia to the United Kingdom. Holland House was an early Jacobean country house that had a prominent history before sadly being largely destroyed in the Blitz.A selection of letters detailing the situation in Spain during the reign of King Charles II, from 1690 to 1699.The letters were written by Alexander Stanhope whilst he was an English envoy in Madrid.Edited and complied by Philip Henry Stanhope, the descendent of Alexander Stanhope. Stanhope was an English aristocrat who is remembered for this role in the Kaspar hauser cause. in a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, lacking the front board. A little rubbing to the spine and rear board, with a few faint handling marks to the rear board. Small crack to the head of the rear joint. Front endpaper is detached but present. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean, with just a couple of light spots. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the title page. Good Only. Seller Inventory # 750P17
