First edition signed hardcover in red cloth covered, gilt ruled boards with gilt spine title slightly darkened but clearly legible. First printing (preceding the UK edition by six months), one of 375 copies signed by the author. Foot of spine lightly bumped, tips still sharp. 200pp text is tight, crisp and unmarked save for being signed by Somerville on second fep. Original cardboard slipcase has a pasted on label that wrap around three sides. Case reinforced with clear tape but displays very well on the shelf. "This book is an effort to describe a visit to the United States, and to express gratitude for the delightful hospitality with which the visitors were received. Beginning in New York, the travelers proceeded to Aiken [South Carolina]; thence, through South and North Carolina, to Virginia, (with a visit to Washington thrown in). On to Providence, Boston, Philadelphia, and an entirely enjoyable experience ended, as it had begun, in the varied and exciting entertainments that New York and Long Island offer" (Somerville writing in Hudson's bibliography). Frontispiece, 7 plates by the author, and headpieces. The famous Irish authoress describes her travels through America and adds bits of fabulous Irish folklore throughout. Includes foxhunting reminiscences, meeting a leprechaun and seeing a 'fairy shoe' and more. 8 b/w full page plates and many vignettes throughout by the author.
