Later printing of Churchill's acclaimed autobiography, recounting the first 25 years of his life. Octavo, original publisher's cloth, illustrated with 7 plates, one folding map. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To E.A. Allen from Winston S. Churchill Christmas 1946." In very good condition. Housed in a custom velvet-lined half morocco clamshell box. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. My Early Life covers the first 25 years of Churchill's life, to the beginning of his parliamentary career. Included are accounts of his childhood; his active service in Cuba, the North West Frontier, and Omdurman; and his exploits during the Boer War, detailing his famous escape from the Boers as a prisoner of war. In this autobiography "Churchill records his experiences in words which will live as long as any 20th-century author is readâ ¦ My Early Life was one of the two Churchill works excerpted by the Nobel Library - for Sir Winston's 1953 Nobel Prize in Literature was won not for his war memoirs but the totality of his work. First published in 1930, this is the 1941 American hardcover reprint from Scribner's. Churchill's autobiography, from his birth in 1874 to about 1904. From his education at Harrow and Sandhurst to his experiences in Cuba, India, and the Second Boer War. 370 pages, 6" X 8-1/2". Includes 28 b&w photos and maps through the book. The dust jacket is intact and is not price clipped, original price of $1.75 is printed on the top corner of the front flap. Jacket has been protected with a clear, removable cover. Jacket has chips at the head and heel of the spine with creases adjacent to the chips. Front panel has a 1/2 inch closed tear at the bottom edge with creases adjacent to the tear. Back panel has some rubbing wear and a triangular chip at the bottom right edge, about 3/4 inch wide and 1 inch tall. Wear and minor chipping at the tips of the corners. Sturdy gray cloth covered boards, with the title and author name on the spine in gold. Cover boards are flat, corners are not bumped or worn, only very minor edge wear at the head and heel of the spine and tips of the corners. Areas of age tanning to the paste-down pages and flyleaf pages. Vintage bookstore label on the first flyleaf - Old Corner Bookstore of Boston. Copyright page includes the Scribner's shield with no prior printings listed. Age appropriate tanning to the edges of the text block. Deckled/rough edges to the fore edge of the text block. Top and bottom edges have some minor scuffs and one tiny dot of age foxing about the size of a sesame seed on the bottom edge. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages.
