About this Item
GEOMORPHOLOGY EARLY PIONEERS STREAM SCULPTURE ON THE ATLANTIC SLOPE 1931 SIGNED. Here for your consideration is a classic work on geography and geomorphology with association with three of the leading lights of the times, the Author Douglas Johnson, Professor of Phsiography at Columbia University, the person to whom it was presented as this first copy from the press, William Morris Davis, Professor of Geography at Harvard University, and Harlan H. Barrows, Department of Geography, University of Chicago, whose note to the Author, a copy of which, is tipped-in. I am very pleased to be able to offer: Stream Sculpture on the Atlantic Slope A Study in the Evolution of Appalachian Rivers, by Douglas Johnson. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ½ x 9 ¾ inches, 143 pages) was published by the Columbia University Press of New York, dated 1931, and the First Edition/First Printing/First Copy from the Press (according to the handwritten Author s presentation note, to Dr. Davis (the Father of American Geography , according to Wikipedia). The book is bound in burgundy hard covers with gilt decorations on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. There is a lovely, black & white panoramic photo of the Delaware Water Gap adorning the endpapers, front and rear. There are 21 illustrations in the book, many of them maps and/or diagrams of geomorphic features of the Appalachian highlands and their drainage. Dr. Davis also wrote the Foreword to the book, and this apparently was once his copy. I do not think I exaggerate when I say that this book is a treasure of the geography profession! Condition: This book is in very good condition. There are some splatter marks on the finish of the front cover, but the decorations and titles are unaffected and still highly attractive. There is some very minor rubbing to the corners and spine tips. Inside, as noted, there is a boldly handwritten presentation note by the Author, and tipped-in, a copy of a short-typewritten note from Dr. Barrows. These are the only marks I found in the book and the interior pages and figures are bright and clean, from cover to cover. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Language: ENG.
