First edition, first impression, signed and dated to the half-title in the year of publication by John Betjeman. The trade issue, not the signed limited edition. Betjeman has added his dates at Marlborough College ('M.C. 1920-1925'), his experiences at which are detailed in Chapter VII. The original recipient was also a Marlburian, hence the reference, and he has added a short gift inscription to his wife lower down the page. Acquired by us from their son. A lovely, Near Fine+ copy: tight and square binding in sharp green boards blind-stamped with a bell pattern and with gilt lettering to the spine; a small area of dulling to the cloth of the lower board, else excellent - bright and fresh in every regard. The unclipped dustwrapper (21s net stated) is Near Fine: crisp and clean, free from toning and with just a little background sunning to the top of the front panel; minor wrinkling to the heel of the spine and a 9mm closed tear to the top of the front panel; presented in a removable, archival-quality Brodart protective cover. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard.
