Suttree by Cormac McCarthy First Edition Association copy signed and inscribed to country music singer songwriter, Billy Ray Reynolds and his wife at the time, Pam. . This piece has incredible history, provenance and significance. It was last sold by Heritage Auction House on October 17, 2013 (Auction # 6100 Lot # 36190) and from there purchased by me from a dealer. Billy Ray met Cormac while working for artist, Bill Kidwell as a stonemason in the mid 70 s. Some other copies warmly inscribed to Billy Ray are out there (from the same auction, a Cities of the Plain signed, your old buddy Cormac). Billy Ray and Cormac stayed in contact and remained lifelong friends. . Sadly, Billy Ray passed away in 2019. In his obituary, it notes that he leaves behind family and his beloved pet Mac. Kidwell called Cormac Mac we know by inscriptions from Kidwell s collection and it would follow that Billy Ray called him Mac as well since Kidwell introduced them. Billy Ray had named his pet after his old pal Cormac. . Cormac was known to be very loyal to his close friends, maintaining friendships over decades. And so when Cormacs last novel, The Passenger came out in 2022 a few years after Billy Ray Reynolds death, it s no surprise that the main Character, Bobby Western had a cat named Billy Ray which was named in honor of his old pal, Billy Ray Reynolds. A couple of longtime friends naming pets after one another; one real, one forever immortalized in the great author s cannon. Copies like this RARELY come on the market and this is an exciting opportunity to own a copy inscribed to a close McCarthy insider and with unshakable provenance. . Nearly fine book with two very small ink stains affecting only one page. Very light smudge to top front board. Else fine. No remainder mark, taut binding, sharp corners.
