The editor's own copy, with his ownership inscription, 17 September 1936, and autograph corrections on pp. 81 and 133; from the library of the author's literary executor, Sir Michael Holroyd (a few other marginal pencillings). Dedicated, "TO SYDNEY MAIDEN"; 1p. publisher's advertisements at end. "Anna Seward [1742-1809] was a blue-stocking, a highbrow, the centre of an intellectual coterie, and she has suffered the invariable fate of such. Highbrows of all ages have one thing in common: they are regarded as unconscious comedians by their successors . . . but . . . she possessed two virtues seldom seen in the men and women who found coteries and form cliques: she was an honest and courageous human being" (preface).
