Free endpapers slightly embrowned, dustwrapper darkened at spine and in fragments (old tape repairs). The editor's own copy, with his ownership inscription, 17 September 1936, and autograph corrections on pp. 81 and 133; from the library of the author's literary executor, Sir Michael Holroyd (a few other marginal pencillings). Dedicated, "TO SYDNEY MAIDEN"; 1p. publisher's advertisements at end. "Anna Seward [1742-1809] was a blue-stocking, a highbrow, the centre of an intellectual coterie, and she has suffered the invariable fate of such. Highbrows of all ages have one thing in common: they are regarded as unconscious comedians by their successors . . . but . . . she possessed two virtues seldom seen in the men and women who found coteries and form cliques: she was an honest and courageous human being" (preface).
