Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Condition: Near-Fine. 12mo. size, 305 pp. Popular Edition, reprint of the original 1874 edition. Inscribed by the author "To Otis Kinsman, My excellent neighbor and friend, with all my heart, Jan. 9. 1883." Green and brown printed illustration on paper over boards. With publisher's advertisements printed on the endpapers. Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber was a Boston humorist and editor of The Carpet Bag, a New England humor magazine. This is a lengthy compilation of verse written from the viewpoint of Mrs. Partington, a comic alter-ego Shillaber introduced in the Boston Daily Post, and which he used frequently throughout his career. Apart from a few small dings and nicks to the edges and corners, and slight shelf curling on the head and heel of the spine, the book is in beautiful shape, the covers very clean, bright and clear, the binding tight, the top gilt still bright, no foxing or soiling in the text, and only the slightest touch of age browning towards the edges. A beautiful personally inscribed copy in extraordinary shape. In uncertain economic times, invest your hard-earned money in items of lasting value you can hold in hand and enjoy.
