Description:

SYLVESTER WRITTEN AND ILLUSTRATED BY SANDRA CALDER DAVIDSON 1967 1ST INSCRIBED ++. Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: "Whoever heard of a frog that didn t like water? Or a frog that couldn t swim? Well, that s Sylvester! He hates water! The sight of it! The taste of it! Ugh! And as for swimming in it no, no, no!" I am very pleased to be able to offer for your consideration a copy of "Sylvester," written and illustrated by Sandra Calder Davidson. Sandra is of course the daughter of Alexander Calder, the sculptor who pioneered the kinetic sculptures and mobiles for which he is now famous. This large hard cover book (8 ¾ x 11 ½ inches, 63 pages) was translated from the French by Alexander Calder, Jean Davidson (Ms. Calder s husband) and Judy Hyun. It was published by the c, is dated 1967 and is the First Printing (so stated). The book is warmly inscribed by Ms. Calder Davidson to a Doctor friend and his three daughters and signed at a venue here in Florida on March 31, 1980. In addition, laid-in is a handwritten note conveying the book to the doctor from Ms. Calder s husband, Jean Davidson. This book is bound in bright blue cloth with colorful images of Sylvester on the cover and a white title. It is protected by a pictorial dust jacket which repeats the cover images. As you would expect, this charming book, for the 4 to 8 year old child, is full of colorful drawings, from cover to cover. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows some edge wear, with a few small tears and tiny chips and is darkened from handling on the spine. The hard covers are better, with some minor bumping to the corners and spine tips, some loss of color in the gutter and a bit of dust-dulling along the top edge. Inside, other than the inscription by the Author/Artist, the book is unmarked and the pages are bright, clean and colorful throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Seller Inventory # 333

ELISHA'S CRY AFTER ELIJAH'S GOD CONSIDER'D AND APPLY'D, WITH REFERENCE TO THE DECEASE OF THE LATE REVEREND MR. RICHARD BAXTER. Who left this Life Decemb. 8th, 1691. An Preach'd in Part on Decemb. 18th, An. Eod. Being the Lord's-Day, At Rutland-House in Charter-house-Yard, London. London: Printed for T. Parkhurst, J. Robinson, J. Lawrence, and J. Dunston, 1696. 18pp + [8] (Alphabetical Index). Richard Baxter (1615 - 1691) was an influential Nonconformist English theologian and church leader. Baxter refused an appointment as Bishop of Hereford in protest of the Act of Uniformity 1662 (which demanded government and church officials adhere to the rites and public prayers prescribed by the Church of England). He was subsequently expelled from the Church and arrested. Nevertheless, his influence in the Nonconformist movement grew both substantially and controversially. Matthew Sylvester (c. 1636 - 1708) was also a member of the Nonconformist movement. A cleric and writer, he is mainly remembered as Baxter's literary executor. His "Reliquiæ Baxterianæ" is noted for both its theological importance and poor editing (Sylvester transcribed much of the work himself and many errata have been noted). An abridgement to the work was issued later by Edmund Calamy, Sylvester's former assistant. Seller Inventory # 010100
