FIRST EDITION 1769, published anonymously. 8vo approximately 200 x 120 mm, 8 x 5 inches, 1 engraved plate, pages: [6], xxiii, [20], 1-277, [1], 1-70, [2], the 20 pages of Alphabetical Catalogue of the Authors wrongly bound at the front instead of at rear, and last page Dedication with Errata on verso should be bound at the front, the final 70 pages are a Catalogue of English Authors on Husbandry, Gardening, Botany and relative Subjects. Bound in full modern sheep with gilt lettered label to spine, armorial bookplate of Admiral Duff (Norwich Duff 1792-1862) dated 1858 to first pastedown, in October 1805 Norwich served at Trafalgar on HMS Mars aged 13 years, the ship was captained by his father, Captain George Duff who lost his life that day by a cannonball. Major Duff whose name is signed in ink at the top of the title page was probably Sir James Duff (1752 1839) a British army officer, who fought in the Napoleonic wars, also fought at the Battle of Valenciennes commanding the guards' light infantry battalion in 1794. On 30 October he was promoted to major-general. 2 patches of light brown stains to fore-edges of 71 leaves, encroaching onto margins in various sizes, not affecting text, pale foxing affecting many margins, occasional other small minor spots and shallow creases, otherwise a good tight copy.
