To rise from a modest background to the presidency of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters is in itself likely to stir up controversy. But, of course, the Jimmy Hoffa story is more than a union story; it is the story of accusation and counter~accusation, of justice and injustice. And, more especially, it is the story of two men: James Riddle Hoffa and Robert Francis Kennedy. Until now, it has usually been the views of the Department of Justice that have held sway in the media and the public marketplace. But there are two sides to every question, and The Trials of Jimmy Hoffa is a serious attempt to set the record straight on the part of one of the antagonists. What Jimmy Hoffa offers in his Trials is a justification and an accusation. First, he shows how he came to leadership in his union, taking the reader on a fascinating tour of union activities of the middle decades of the century. Then, he offers seemingly incontrovertible proof that he was the subject of a bitter vendetta by the Attorney General, who, Hoffa maintains, was determined to put the Teamster leader in jail~whatever the cost. And third, Jimmy Hoffa deals, in detail, with each one of his major trials, culminating in the Chattanooga jury~tampering trial, as a result of which he was sentenced to prison for eight years. Jimmy Hoffa admits he is no saint. But nor, he says, is he the sinner he is held up to be. The principle of justice on which this nation rests is that of fair trial and scrupulous adherence to standards of legality at all times. Jimmy Hoffa claims he was not accorded such treatment, and his Trials gives the details as he knows them. Whatever opinion may obtain about the author, it is clear that his conviction was obtained by highly questionable means. And the sort of government activity that brought Hoffa's conviction about needs to be exposed. Seller Inventory # 6042401
