717 pages. A biographical novel, and the first book, by the Siberian-born immigrant to the United States. 'From the charming first chapters of farm life in Siberia through periods of Russian terrorism, war, and revolution' -- from the front flap. A Harper 'Find' book. Kalashnikoff went on to write several books for children including the Newberry honor book, The Defender. Stated first edition (first printing). A very good copy, cloth a bit grubby at the edges, spine gilt somewhat darkened and tidemark to page block. In a good only dust jacket that is chipped and torn with loss to rear bottom corner affecting some text. Inscribed by the author to the former owner: 'with my sincere admiration and best wishes.
