A Tale for the Time Being

First published in 2013, A Tale for the Time Being is Ruth Ozeki's acclaimed novel exploring memory, identity, fate and the unexpected connections that link lives across continents and generations. The story begins when a diary, believed to have drifted across the Pacific following the 2011 Japanese tsunami, is discovered on the coast of British Columbia. Through its pages, Ozeki weaves together the lives of a troubled Japanese teenager and a novelist, combining literary fiction with reflections on Zen Buddhism, science, history and the nature of time itself. Shortlisted for the 2013 Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, the novel is widely regarded as Ozeki's finest work and one of the most distinctive novels of the twenty-first century.
