Item description from seller

Fine condition dark textured blue cloth boards with blind-stamped front cover decoration and gold spine lettering. Includes List of Other Books by Sir Philip Gibbs; Foreword by Sir Philip GibbsThe upper and lower board spine edges and board tips are very slightly rubbed/lightened (see photographs). The dust jacket is in two parts with 1) the front jacket cover and spine and2) the rear cover each housed and protected within ultra clear polypropylene 100% archival safe, acid free (no pvc) bags (see photographs). The blank front and rear endpapers are lightly age - darkened and foxed and page 145/146 has a crease at the lower corner; all other pages are in fine condition and the binding is exceedingly tight and square (see photographs). The blank first free front endpaper contains a former owner signature and an exceedingly rare vintage October 2, 1925 signature by the publisher, GEORGE DORAN. The upper right corner of the page contains a vintage small 1/4 inch circular red, white and blue sticker with the letter "A". The full title page contains the black-and-white octagonal "GHD" colophon symbol, with the verso containing a "B", presumably indicative of the First American Edition. "With the brilliance of the very great journalist he is and the sincerity of a witness and prophet, Philip Gibbs paints in this book the world that was, the agony it went through, and the things we must face if we are to save the future. He starts with the sense of peace that was over all the world early in 1914, shows the sudden approach of the Great War and its dreadful catastrophe, and paints such a picture of after-developments as no one else has been able to give us. Particularly valuable is his analysis of the factors that menace present and future. No detail escapes him from the Dawes Report to the Ku Klux Klan; both the continents of Europe and America are held in his world view. And yet it reads with the fascination of a story and the thrill of a great drama. Here is no confusing clutter of day-by-day journalism but a perspective on all the difficult problems the world faces today. And yet there is something beyond this lucidity and grasp in "Ten Years After;" there is the profound emotion of "The Middle of the Road" and "Now It Can Be Told." The book would not be the work of Philip Gibbs if it were not inspired by a passion for truth and by the sense of the human spirit as something beyond all comparison noble and beautiful." - from the jacket front.…

Store description

Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
