Most of us know that Roosevelt loved the rugged outdoor life and that he eventually championed the conservation movement as president. Cutright traces the development of these impulses back to Roosevelt's early years, when as a young schoolboy he became fascinated with the natural world. This interest expanded throughout his years of education and travel and eventually grew into a significant political commitment. While the book explores a lesser-known side of Roosevelt's life, it does so in extraordinary and sometimes excruciating detail that will tire all but the most loyal Roosevelt aficionados.
