About this Item
Small Octavo (7 5/8 x 5 3/4 inches; 195 x 145 mm), 15 [1] pages in the publisher's original sewn wrappers. INSCRIBED on the front free end paper: "Paris 10.4.33 / For Miss Sonya Schulberg / Sympathiquement / Brian Coffey." One of only 250 copies of the Irish poet's debut solo book of poems, printed for him and placed on sale at the Librairie Jeannette Monnier in Paris. The recipient, the late Sonya Schulberg O'Sullivan, was an author ("They Cried a Little") and the younger sister of the late novelist and screenwriter Budd Schulberg. Brian Coffey (1905-1995) lived in Paris in the 1930s and was part of a circle of Irish Modernist authors that included Samuel Beckett and Denis Devlin. Coffey's "Three Poems" followed a book of poems that he published in Dublin in 1930 with Denis Devlin. Aside from a few limited editions, signed copies of Coffey's works are scarce. CONDITION: Age toning to the wrappers, a split along the spine (although the wrappers are still attached), a partial ring stain to the rear wrapper, and some very light pencil underlinings and erasures.
