Lacking dust jacket. § First edition, presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper:"James Rorty, from his friend Robinson Jeffers. Tor House, Carmel, California. March, 1932." Rorty was a close friend of Jeffers, a critic and fellow poet. The poet and critic James Rorty played an important role in Jeffers' achieving recognition as a poet. ".James Rorty brought [Tamar and Other Poems, 1924, Jeffers' third book] to the attention of Mark Van Doren. Enthusiastic reviews by Rorty, Van Doren, and others appeared. A demand sprang up; Jeffers returned the 450 unsold copies to the printer [in New York], who sold out the edition. Tamar is the first of the author's major works, and was instrumental in establishing him as one of the country's foremost poets" -- Alberts, pp. 19-20. Broomfield A15b.
