Hardcover. Foreword by W.H. Auden. 8vo. Teal blue cloth with silver spine lettering, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. xvi, 304pp. Very good/very good. Binding front board lightly sunned and bearing ghostly image of jacket front panel, else tight and internally fine; jacket a bit age toned and soiled. Handsome first edition of the volume that finally earned the poet and children's author (1905-78) the Pulitzer Prize -- and boldly inscribed and signed by her in black ink on front flyleaf: "For Judy and Walt / Quay's gift -- / the good wishes of / Phyllis McGinley / Dec. 1960." Though some criticized McGinley as a "light" poet who failed to tackle issues, Auden -- acclaimed for his "serious" verse but able to appreciate "light" verse -- provides a rousing defense of her work. Signed firsts of this PP winner are seldom seen. Seller Inventory # 50600
