Original plain papered boards, with a later manuscript title-label on the spine; edges untrimmed; covers a little marked and worn, with a short split at the head of the spine expertly stabilised; sealed tear to one leaf (Ff2); scattered foxing (generally light); an excellent copy. A presentation copy, inscribed 'From the Author' on the front free endpaper, uncut in the original boards. Cochrane's treatise on soil chemistry is one of the earliest works to apply scientific principles and analysis to agricultural practices. Several sections refer to Britain's colonial possessions in the Caribbean. There is another issue of this first edition, with the publisher given as J. Murray and S. Highley; a 'new edition' was published by John Murray in 1803.
